The Avenues is a quiet residential neighborhood with historic homes and trail access. It suits a calm stay, but there is little nightlife and getting around involves hills and short rideshare trips.
Steep streets and old Victorian homes give The Avenues a quiet, residential feel. It sits on a hillside just northeast of downtown and is one of the calmest and safest parts of the city, with joggers, dog walkers and people heading up City Creek Canyon. The commercial strip along 3rd Avenue and 11th Avenue has a handful of cafes and neighborhood restaurants, but this is not a nightlife area. Most places close early and the streets are quiet after dark. It works if you want a peaceful base near trails and the Capitol and don't mind the climb or a short rideshare to downtown in the evening.

9th and 9th is a village-style neighborhood with good cafes and a low-key, safe atmosphere. It works well for afternoons, brunch and early dinners, but nightlife is limited and getting to downtown means a short ride.
Sugar House is a walkable neighborhood with a strong food and drink scene and a calm residential edge. Evenings feel safe, and it suits travelers who want a local atmosphere more than the downtown core.
Downtown is the most central base for a solo trip, with walkable sights, plenty of transit and many places to eat alone. It is comfortable by day and on the main streets in the evening, but the west side near Pioneer Park and Rio Grande is best avoided at night.
