Downtown and the River Walk are the easiest base for a first visit, with lots of people, patrols and places to eat alone. Safety drops on the quiet edges after dark, so stay on the main loop and use rideshares late at night.
The River Walk is where most visits to San Antonio center, with paths below street level lined with restaurants, hotels and boat tour docks, and the Alamo and La Villita a short climb up. During the day and early evening the main loop is crowded, well lit and patrolled, and eating alone on a patio is normal. The quieter parts of the river, the Museum Reach path and the streets just past the main loop empty out at night. The paths are uneven and some stretches have no railing. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars, hold your bag close in crowded bars, and take a rideshare instead of walking through empty downtown blocks late at night. Street-level downtown has visible homelessness and some panhandling, which is usually harmless but can be uncomfortable.

A laid-back, creative area with good food and patios, best for daytime walks and early-evening outings. Take rides late at night and stay on the busier streets.
A quiet, historic neighborhood with a handful of local bars and restaurants. It shows a less touristy side of the city, and a rideshare covers the trips in and out.
The Pearl is the most polished evening area in San Antonio, with good food, strong lighting and easy solo seating. It costs more than other areas and isn't where locals go for nightlife, but it works well as a base.
