Coronado is very safe, quiet and scenic, suited to beach days and a low-key stay. It has no real nightlife and few budget options, but works well as a day trip from downtown or as a calm base.
Coronado is a small, affluent island city across the bay from downtown, reached by a short ferry ride or the bridge. The main sights are the Victorian Hotel del Coronado, a wide white-sand beach, quiet tree-lined streets and the small-town restaurants and shops on Orange Avenue. Crime is very low, making it one of the calmest places in the San Diego area, and it suits bike rides and waterfront walks. There's little nightlife and most places wind down by about 10 PM. It's pricey, so it works best as a day trip or as a quiet, upscale base if being a bit removed from the city's nightlife and sights doesn't bother you. The ferry and local shuttles make getting around without a car realistic.

La Jolla is among the safest and most scenic parts of San Diego, good for beach and coastline activities by day and a calm evening. It's expensive, works best with a car or rideshare, and is much quieter at night than downtown or Pacific Beach.
Little Italy is one of the better bases in San Diego for a woman on her own. It's walkable, full of restaurants and calmer than the Gaslamp. It's well lit and busy in the evening, though some homelessness on the outskirts is worth keeping in mind after dark.
North Park is a walkable neighborhood for food, coffee and craft beer, and it's easy to spend an evening here alone. It suits travelers who want a local feel, but it's farther from the beaches and downtown sights.
