The Gaslamp Quarter is the most central place to stay in San Diego, with hostels, hotels and restaurants all within a few blocks. The main streets are busy and well patrolled, but nightlife crowds and downtown homelessness mean it's worth taking basic precautions after dark.
Downtown's entertainment district is a compact grid of restored 19th-century buildings full of restaurants, rooftop bars and clubs, about a ten-minute walk from the waterfront and Petco Park. During the day it's a busy shopping and dining area with tourists and office workers around. After about 10 PM it turns into a full nightlife district, with crowds, loud music and heavy drinking. Lighting is good and there's steady police and private security along Fifth Avenue, but the side streets and the blocks toward East Village empty out late and have more homelessness and open drug use. Hostels and hotels are close, and so are trolley stops, which makes it an easy base for a first visit. Stick to the main avenues, take a rideshare home after a night out, and keep your drink in sight.
