Little Italy is one of the better bases in San Diego for a woman on her own. It's walkable, full of restaurants and calmer than the Gaslamp. It's well lit and busy in the evening, though some homelessness on the outskirts is worth keeping in mind after dark.
India Street is the spine of Little Italy, a compact downtown neighborhood with some of the city's best restaurants, patio cafes and a big Saturday farmers market. It started as the center of San Diego's Italian fishing community and is now mostly condos, design shops, plazas and rooftop bars, with the harbor a short walk west. Streets are well lit, diners and dog walkers are out well into the evening, and nightlife is much calmer than in the Gaslamp Quarter, so it's one of the more comfortable areas for a solo traveler. Some homelessness shows up on the edges toward the freeway and uptown, so stay on the main streets after dark. Sitting at a bar counter or patio table alone is normal here.

North Park is a walkable neighborhood for food, coffee and craft beer, and it's easy to spend an evening here alone. It suits travelers who want a local feel, but it's farther from the beaches and downtown sights.
La Jolla is among the safest and most scenic parts of San Diego, good for beach and coastline activities by day and a calm evening. It's expensive, works best with a car or rideshare, and is much quieter at night than downtown or Pacific Beach.
Pacific Beach is a sociable beach neighborhood, with cafes and sunsets by day and a loud bar scene at night. It suits solo travelers who like a young, active atmosphere and plan around the late-night crowds.
