Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is a low-key, local-feeling beach town known for surfing, cafes and sunsets, with a modest nightlife scene. Daytime and early evening are comfortable, but the residential streets are dim at night and street drinking and drug use are more visible than in other beach areas.

Ocean Beach, known as OB, is the most easygoing of San Diego's beach neighborhoods. It has a long pier, a surf scene, an off-leash dog beach, and Newport Avenue's antique shops, vintage stores and cafes. It's bohemian and a bit scruffy, with a strong local identity, few chain stores and plenty of independent restaurants and dive bars. By day it's relaxed, with lots of solo beachgoers, surfers and walkers. In the evening the main strip becomes a casual bar scene, and there's more homelessness and some public drinking and drug use on and around Newport Avenue and the beach. The surrounding residential streets are quiet and poorly lit, so plan the evening around the main strip and take a rideshare home. Sunset Cliffs, to the south, has great views but the edges are dangerous, so go in daylight.
