Pacific Beach, or PB, is San Diego's main party beach. By day it's sunny and active, with surfers, cyclists and university students. Weekend nights bring a young, rowdy, heavy-drinking crowd, so expect noise, packed bars and some intoxicated behavior. The main streets are well lit and busy, and the beachfront hostels have plenty of other travelers. Spend the day and early evening at the beach and cafes, and take a rideshare rather than walking residential streets late at night.

The Gaslamp Quarter is the most central place to stay in San Diego, with hostels, hotels and restaurants all within a few blocks. The main streets are busy and well patrolled, but nightlife crowds and downtown homelessness mean it's worth taking basic precautions after dark.
