San Francisco, United States
Castro District is the heart of SF's LGBTQ+ community - very welcoming and safe, especially for LGBTQ+ travelers. Good restaurants and nightlife with a strong community feel.
The Castro is the heart of San Francisco's LGBTQ+ community and it shows - rainbow flags everywhere, openly affectionate couples, and a general sense of acceptance you don't find in a lot of places. It's very safe, especially if you're LGBTQ+, because the community looks out for each other. Even if you're not gay, it's a welcoming area with good restaurants and a fun nightlife scene. The Castro Theatre is historic and the drag shows are entertaining. There's a strong sense of community here that you can feel just walking around. It stays busy until late which adds to the safety factor. The only downside is it can get pretty touristy, especially on weekends when people come to gawk. But overall it's a great neighborhood - safe, accepting, and with a lot of character.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
North Beach has good Italian food and Beat history in a walkable, safe area. Less touristy than Fisherman's Wharf but still gets crowded on weekends. Good mix of cafes, restaurants, and bars.
Union Square is the main tourist and shopping hub - safe, central, but quite commercial. Good for first-time visitors who want easy access to everything and don't mind paying tourist prices for the convenience.
Marina District has good waterfront views and a young professional crowd, but the nightlife can feel like a college town. Safe area with decent restaurants, though the weekend bar scene isn't for everyone.
