San Francisco, United States
Fisherman's Wharf is the classic SF tourist trap - crowded, overpriced, but safe from serious crime. Fun for the sea lions and Alcatraz tours, but don't drive here due to car break-ins and watch your belongings in crowds.
Fisherman's Wharf is pure tourist trap, but it's the fun kind if you're into that. The sea lions at Pier 39 are genuinely entertaining and the kids love them. Everything is overpriced and touristy as you'd expect, but it's safe during the day with lots of families around. The food is mostly mediocre tourist stuff, though some of the seafood places are decent. Do NOT drive here - car break-ins happen constantly. Seriously, people get their windows smashed multiple times a day in those parking garages. Take an Uber or public transit instead. Watch your stuff in the crowds because pickpockets work the area, but violent crime isn't really an issue. It's cheesy but harmless, and if you want to do the full San Francisco tourist experience, this is part of it.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Union Square is the main tourist and shopping hub - safe, central, but quite commercial. Good for first-time visitors who want easy access to everything and don't mind paying tourist prices for the convenience.
North Beach has good Italian food and Beat history in a walkable, safe area. Less touristy than Fisherman's Wharf but still gets crowded on weekends. Good mix of cafes, restaurants, and bars.
Chinatown has authentic Chinese food and culture in a crowded, touristy area. Safe during busy daytime hours but watch for pickpockets and be prepared for language barriers. Gets quiet after dark.
