Marina District has good waterfront views and a young professional crowd, but the nightlife can feel like a college town. Safe area with decent restaurants, though the weekend bar scene isn't for everyone.
The Marina is where young tech workers with money live, so it's very safe but can feel like a grown-up college town on weekends. The bars get pretty loud and crowded with the post-grad crowd, which might not be everyone's scene. But if you like running or walking by the water, it's amazing - you've got the Golden Gate Bridge right there and the Marina Green is perfect for morning exercise. Crissy Field is great for a peaceful walk, especially early in the day before it gets crowded. The restaurants tend to be health-focused and pricey, lots of organic this and sustainable that. It's definitely safe to walk around at any time, though the weekend bar scene can get obnoxious if you're looking for something more chill. Good area if you want to feel secure and don't mind the yuppie vibe.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Nob Hill is the old-money luxury district with grand hotels and low crime rates. It's very safe but also very expensive - expect to pay premium prices for everything. Good location if budget isn't an issue and you want maximum security.
Richmond District is very safe and has great Asian food, but it's foggy, quiet, and far from the action. Good if you want to live like a local, not great if you want to be in the middle of SF's attractions.
Sunset District is safe and quiet with good local restaurants and beach access, but it's foggy and far from downtown. Best for people who want a residential feel and don't mind commuting to other neighborhoods for nightlife.
