Summary

Richmond District is very safe and has great Asian food, but it's foggy, quiet, and far from the action. Good if you want to live like a local, not great if you want to be in the middle of SF's attractions.

Details

The Richmond is like living in a different city - foggy, quiet, and way safer than most of San Francisco. It's heavily Asian, so you'll find amazing dim sum and Vietnamese food, plus grocery stores with stuff you won't see anywhere else. The fog situation here is real though - it can be sunny downtown and absolutely freezing and gray out here. Ocean Beach is beautiful but the water is ridiculously cold year-round, so don't plan on swimming. It's very residential and family-oriented, which means low crime but also not much happening at night. Perfect if you want to feel totally safe and experience local life, but you'll be taking the train downtown for nightlife and most tourist stuff. Great area for solo female travelers who prioritize safety over being in the action.
