San Francisco, United States
Sunset District is safe and quiet with good local restaurants and beach access, but it's foggy and far from downtown. Best for people who want a residential feel and don't mind commuting to other neighborhoods for nightlife.
The Sunset feels like suburbia dropped into the city - rows of identical houses, quiet streets, and families everywhere. It's super safe but also pretty sleepy, and the fog here is next level. You can be wearing shorts downtown and need a heavy jacket out here. The food scene is underrated though, especially if you like Asian food. There are some hidden gems tucked into the residential streets. Ocean Beach is right there but don't expect to sunbathe - it's usually cold and windy. The surfers don't seem to mind but they're wearing wetsuits year-round. It's a great area if you want to feel completely safe and experience how locals actually live, but you'll definitely be commuting elsewhere for nightlife. Very family-friendly and diverse, just not very exciting.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Pacific Heights is where SF's wealthy live in huge Victorian houses. Very safe and quiet, but also expensive and residential. Good for sightseeing the architecture, less good if you want nightlife or budget options.
Richmond District is very safe and has great Asian food, but it's foggy, quiet, and far from the action. Good if you want to live like a local, not great if you want to be in the middle of SF's attractions.
Marina District has good waterfront views and a young professional crowd, but the nightlife can feel like a college town. Safe area with decent restaurants, though the weekend bar scene isn't for everyone.
