Canyon Road is Santa Fe's gallery district and one of its calmest areas to spend time alone. It's safe and relaxed, but poorly lit at night with limited sidewalks, so plan evening rides and watch your bag in crowds.
Canyon Road is a narrow half-mile lane where historic adobe homes have become more than a hundred galleries, studios and restaurants, with sculpture gardens in the courtyards. It makes for an easy afternoon alone, wandering from gallery to gallery. The surrounding Eastside is a quiet residential area of adobe houses and cottonwoods. Galleries close in the late afternoon, so the road is quiet in the evening except around the restaurants. For much of its length there are no sidewalks, so cars and pedestrians share the road, and lighting is limited. Pickpocketing can happen in crowds on Friday evenings and during festivals, so keep bags closed. Walking back to the Plaza after dinner is normally fine on the main roads, but a rideshare makes sense late at night.

The Plaza and downtown are the most convenient and best-lit base in Santa Fe, with museums, restaurants and hotels a short walk apart. The mood is calm rather than rowdy, and the main concern is how quiet the side streets get after dinner.
The Railyard is Santa Fe's livelier, more modern district, with the best choice of breweries, live music and the farmers' market. It's comfortable on the main streets, and the thing to avoid is the rail trail after dark.
Midtown is Santa Fe's creative district, with Meow Wolf, breweries and coffee roasters, and it suits an afternoon or early evening out. It's spread out and best done by rideshare after dark, and hotels along Cerrillos Road vary in quality.
