Summary

The Plaza and downtown are the most convenient and best-lit base in Santa Fe, with museums, restaurants and hotels a short walk apart. The mood is calm rather than rowdy, and the main concern is how quiet the side streets get after dinner.

Details

Most of Santa Fe's hotels, museums and restaurants are on or near the Plaza, which makes it the easiest base for a first visit. The Palace of the Governors, St. Francis Cathedral Basilica, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and the shops under the Plaza portal are all a few minutes' walk apart. The area is busy from morning until early evening, with good lighting and foot traffic around the Plaza itself. It empties out after dinner, and the quieter side streets and parking lots can be dark and deserted late at night. Panhandling happens around the Plaza and some people can be persistent, but it's rarely aggressive. Bar seating and patio tables are common, and dining alone draws no attention. Stay on the main streets after dark and take a rideshare for longer trips.
