Details

The southern half of the Historic District runs from Gaston Street down to Forsyth Park, with live-oak-lined streets, Gothic Revival churches, the SCAD campus buildings and the park's famous fountain. It is quieter and more residential than the riverfront, so it suits travelers who prefer a calmer stay but still want to walk to restaurants and sights. Forsyth Park is busy on weekends with a farmers' market, joggers, dog walkers and students, and the streets around it feel comfortable during the day and into the early evening. After dark the park's interior paths are not well lit, and a lone walker should skirt the edges on Bull Street or Drayton Street. Drivers also park on the surrounding streets, so car break-ins occur; keep bags out of sight. The restaurant corridors on Broughton, Whitaker and Bull streets stay lively until late and are the best routes for walking home.
