Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Amir Timur Square has good public transport, restaurants, and is walkable to major attractions. You'll pay more than residential areas but it's convenient and has more English speakers.
Amir Timur Square sits in the center of modern Tashkent, surrounded by the Amir Timur Museum, Hotel Uzbekistan, government buildings, and upscale restaurants. The area is busy from morning until late evening with business people, tourists, and locals. Broadway Street (Sayilgoh) runs from here to Independence Square - a pedestrian corridor with street musicians, artists, cafes, and ice cream stands that stays active until midnight. You'll see both regular and tourist police around throughout the day. English is more common here than elsewhere in the city - hotel staff, tour operators, and some restaurant servers can communicate in English. You'll see women eating alone or working on laptops in cafes, so dining solo doesn't draw attention. The area is safe to walk around at night, though it empties out after midnight. Street lighting is good and there are taxi stands and metro stations nearby. The downside is prices - everything costs more here than in residential areas, though still cheap compared to Western cities.
