Details

The Old Town (Eski Shahar) centers around Chorsu Bazaar, the massive blue-domed market that predates Soviet Tashkent. West of the Anhor canal, narrow streets wind between traditional courtyard homes. Older residents wear traditional dress and you'll hear the call to prayer from several mosques. Chorsu Bazaar is the draw - a sprawling market under a turquoise dome selling spices, dried fruits, textiles, and traditional bread. The market is active 7am to 6pm when tourist police are around. This is the most conservative part of Tashkent. Cover shoulders and knees out of respect for local traditions. Pickpocketing is the main concern in the crowded bazaar - keep valuables in front-facing bags and don't show off expensive cameras. The area empties after 7pm when vendors go home, and it feels isolated after dark compared to the daytime crowds. English is rare. Locals are friendly during the day, but visit during busy hours and head back to modern areas for evening. The Chorsu metro station makes it easy to visit for a few hours then leave.
