city, Vietnam
Jungle peninsula with less crowded beaches, beachfront restaurants, and Son Tra Night Market. Coastal areas safe, interior roads isolated and dangerous for motorbike riders.
Son Tra Peninsula juts into the ocean north of the city. Jungle-covered, home to endangered red-shanked doucs monkeys. Coastal road Vo Nguyen Giap Street runs along the base with beachfront restaurants, bars, and Son Tra Night Market near Dragon Bridge. During the day, good for motorbike rides with viewpoints and seafood restaurants. Beaches less crowded than My Khe - locals swimming, families picnicking. Tourist police patrol main areas. The roads up into the jungle are dangerous, especially for inexperienced motorbike riders. An American tourist died recently in an accident on the winding roads. At night, beachfront along Vo Nguyen Giap stays active - Esco Beach has DJ nights and fire shows. Interior roads get dark and isolated. Stick to coastal areas and main roads after sunset. Night market near Dragon Bridge packs out on weekends - food stalls, live music, bridge's fire-and-water show brings crowds.
