Hoi An, Vietnam
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Hoi An.
Local residential island across the river from Ancient Town. Riverside cafes, Vietnamese street life, safe during the day. Quiet after 9pm.
Just across the Thu Bon River from the Ancient Town - 5-minute walk over a bridge with river views. This is the local side of Hoi An. You'll see farmers in vegetable gardens, kids in school uniforms, street food stalls, and family restaurants on Nguyen Tri Phuong Street. The riverside cafes range from bamboo huts with thatched roofs to modern spots with panoramic views - wooden decks overlooking the river, Vietnamese coffee, quieter than the Ancient Town. A few places like Gratitude Yoga Retreat, K-Noy Speakeasy, and Old & New bar pull in international travelers, so you'll hear English and meet other people. Safe during the day, families around in the evenings. After 9pm it's very quiet - locals go inside, nothing much happening. Head back to Ancient Town if you want nightlife.
