Manama, Bahrain
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Manama.
Old dense neighborhood with multicultural character and cheap housing. Higher crime and confusing dark streets make it unsuitable for visitors. Day visits for ethnic markets okay, stay elsewhere.
One of Manama's oldest areas with narrow lanes, small shops, and packed homes. Feels local, not touristy. Large Indian, Filipino, Ethiopian, and Pakistani communities with ethnic grocery stores and cheap restaurants you won't see in upscale areas. Gudaibiya Palace and some embassies are here, plus the National Assembly, but it's mainly a working-class area where new arrivals find cheap housing. Less English spoken since visitors don't usually come here. Higher crime than Seef or Adliya - theft and burglary are issues. The narrow streets are poorly lit at night and easy to get lost in. Visit during the day for ethnic markets and local atmosphere, but don't stay here. Higher crime, bad lighting, confusing streets, and no tourist setup make it difficult.
