Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Manama

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Manama.

Summary

American expat area near the naval base with familiar restaurants and tight security. The bar scene brings harassment issues at night. Fine during the day for Al Fateh Mosque or hotel restaurants, but skip the bar strip.

Details

Juffair centers around the American Naval Base, so you get American-style restaurants, chain stores, and a big expat community. It feels less Middle Eastern than other parts of Manama. The area near the base and hotels has good security, but Juffair's bar scene brings problems. Women get catcalled more here, especially on Exhibition Street after 10pm where the bar crowd gets rowdy. Some prostitution in the area means women alone sometimes get mistaken for sex workers. During the day it's fine - families, restaurants, and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque is worth seeing. At night, stick to hotel restaurants and known places, not the bar strip. It's 10 minutes from the airport if you need somewhere convenient.
