Valparaíso, Chile
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Valparaíso.
The main tourist area with the most infrastructure and English speakers. Crime still happens here despite the police presence, so stay alert.
Most tourists stay in Cerro Alegre, where you'll find the highest concentration of hotels, international restaurants, and English speakers. The British settled here in the 1800s, leaving Victorian-style houses that now hold cafes, galleries, and shops. During the day, the streets along Paseo Dimalow and Almirante Montt fill with people working on laptops in cafes. The area stays busy until around 10pm. Police patrol regularly and street lighting is better than other hills. But don't get complacent - muggings happen here even during the day. Locals warn strongly against leaving the main tourist streets, even in daylight. Stick to the established pedestrian areas, keep valuables hidden, and take Uber after dark rather than walking down to the port.
