Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Valparaíso

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Valparaíso.

Summary

The viewpoint and naval museum are worth seeing, but only go during busy daytime hours. Not somewhere to linger.

Details

Mainly visited for Paseo 21 de Mayo, a viewpoint with panoramic ocean views. The Naval and Maritime Museum is here in the old Naval School building. The Ascensor Artillería funicular from 1894 runs 175 meters at a 30-degree angle to reach the top. During the day, tourists come for the views and the craft fair selling handmade goods. Despite being a popular daytime spot, the area between Plaza Sotomayor and Ascensor Artillería has been flagged as dangerous. This isn't a neighborhood with tourist infrastructure like Cerro Alegre - it's just a destination for a specific visit. Come when tour groups are there, see the viewpoint and museum, then leave. Don't stick around after the craft vendors pack up in late afternoon.
