Donji Grad is the most practical base in Zagreb, with parks, museums, cafes and transport all close together. It is safe day and night, with the usual caution on crowded trams and in quiet parks after dark.
Donji Grad is the flat city centre, laid out in a grid of 19th-century buildings, parks and squares. Ban Jelačić Square, the Dolac market, the Green Horseshoe of parks, most museums and theatres and the main shopping streets are all here. It is busy during the day and stays active in the evening, especially around Cvjetni trg and Petrinjska, where terraces are full until late. The streets are well lit and easy to navigate, and eating alone at cafes and restaurants is normal. Pickpockets sometimes work the crowded trams and the main square, and the parks and the area near the train station are quiet and less comfortable late at night. Trams, buses and the train and bus stations are all close, which makes this the most practical base.

Tkalčićeva and Kaptol are the social centre of Zagreb, with a street of terraces and bars that stays busy and well lit into the night. It is one of the easier places in the city to go out alone, with the usual care around drinks and getting home.
Britanski trg is a calm, local pocket just west of the centre, good for slow cafe mornings and the Sunday market. It is safe and quiet at night with limited nightlife, and a short walk or tram ride from the main square.
Gornji Grad is the quiet historic hilltop and one of the safest parts of Zagreb. It suits daytime sightseeing and calm evenings, with livelier bars a short walk away on Tkalčićeva.
