Gornji Grad is the quiet historic hilltop and one of the safest parts of Zagreb. It suits daytime sightseeing and calm evenings, with livelier bars a short walk away on Tkalčićeva.
Gornji Grad is the medieval hilltop core of Zagreb, with cobbled lanes, gas lamps and small squares around St. Mark's Church. It is quiet and very safe, and apart from a few cafes there is little going on in the evening. From the Lower Town you reach it by a short climb up stairs or a one-minute funicular ride. The Museum of Broken Relationships and the Lotrščak Tower are here, and the Strossmayer promenade looks out over the rooftops. It works well for a morning coffee and a wander. Walking back after dinner is fine on the main lanes, but some side streets are dim and empty late at night. There is no real nightlife up here, though Tkalčićeva is a five-minute walk away.

Britanski trg is a calm, local pocket just west of the centre, good for slow cafe mornings and the Sunday market. It is safe and quiet at night with limited nightlife, and a short walk or tram ride from the main square.
Tkalčićeva and Kaptol are the social centre of Zagreb, with a street of terraces and bars that stays busy and well lit into the night. It is one of the easier places in the city to go out alone, with the usual care around drinks and getting home.
Donji Grad is the most practical base in Zagreb, with parks, museums, cafes and transport all close together. It is safe day and night, with the usual caution on crowded trams and in quiet parks after dark.
