Jarun is the lakeside leisure area for swimming, cycling and summer nightlife. It is fine by day and in the busy cafe strip, but the long, dark paths and the distance from the centre mean you need a plan for getting back.
Jarun is the lakeside recreation area in the southwest, with a string of man-made lakes, running and cycling paths, beaches and, in summer, clubs and cafe-bars along the water. By day it is busy with runners, cyclists and families, and people come to swim or walk the paths. In the evening the cafes by the lake fill with young locals, and the bars and clubs stay busy through summer. It is a trek from the centre, reached by tram, and the lake paths are long, dark and quiet outside the busy sections. Solo visitors are better off staying around the cafe strip and taking a tram or ride-hail back. In winter the area is very quiet.

Tkalčićeva and Kaptol are the social centre of Zagreb, with a street of terraces and bars that stays busy and well lit into the night. It is one of the easier places in the city to go out alone, with the usual care around drinks and getting home.
