Trešnjevka is a local, student-heavy residential district with a covered market, simple bars and low prices. It is safe and busy around the market and main streets, with extra care needed on quieter residential streets late at night.
Trešnjevka is a large, dense residential district southwest of the centre. It was historically working-class and is now popular with students, artists and young locals. It shows everyday Zagreb: a covered market at Trešnjevački trg, local bakeries, small bars, craft-beer spots, and independent cafes with lower prices than downtown. It isn't a sightseeing area, so there are few visitors and staff speak less English than in the centre. The streets around the market and Ozaljska are lively and safe in the evening, while quieter residential stretches are dim and empty at night. Trams reach the centre in about ten minutes, which makes it a reasonable base for a local, cheaper stay.

Maksimir is a quiet residential district around Zagreb's biggest park, suited to nature and cheaper stays. It is safe in the day, with more caution needed after dark on empty stretches and in the park.
Jarun is the lakeside leisure area for swimming, cycling and summer nightlife. It is fine by day and in the busy cafe strip, but the long, dark paths and the distance from the centre mean you need a plan for getting back.
Tkalčićeva and Kaptol are the social centre of Zagreb, with a street of terraces and bars that stays busy and well lit into the night. It is one of the easier places in the city to go out alone, with the usual care around drinks and getting home.
