About Copenhagen

  • Copenhagen is generally safe, with low crime rates and good infrastructure. Most people speak English, so getting help or asking directions isn't a problem. The metro runs 24/7 with automated trains, and bikes dominate the streets - over 350km of separate bike lanes means cyclists have their own dedicated infrastructure.
  • The bike culture is serious here. You need to watch out constantly because cyclists have right of way and they're everywhere. Don't walk in bike lanes or you'll get aggressive bell ringing. It's also the safest way to get around if you rent one, but bikes do get stolen frequently - use a good lock.
  • Sitting alone in cafes is normal. You'll see people working on laptops or reading for hours, and solo dining doesn't attract any attention. Street harassment is uncommon compared to many European cities, though pickpockets work tourist areas like Strøget and Central Station, especially in summer.
  • The police are visible and speak English. Emergency services use 112 (same as rest of EU), and there's a separate medical helpline at 1813 for non-urgent health questions. Some neighborhoods are safer than others - Vesterbro and Østerbro are fine at night, while parts of Nørrebro need more caution after dark.

Language & Communication

Danish is the official language, but most people speak English well. Emergency services (112) and the medical helpline (1813) have English-speaking operators. Getting around, dining, and asking for help in English is easy.

Cultural Tips
  • Hygge (hoo-gah) is the Danish concept of coziness that comes up a lot. Danes are polite but not overly formal - direct eye contact and firm handshakes are normal.
  • Service charges are included in bills, so tipping isn't expected. You can round up or leave 5-10% for good service, but it's not required. Show up on time for reservations.
  • Don't walk in bike lanes. Cyclists have right of way and will aggressively ring bells if you're in their space. Cross bike lanes only at designated spots and stay right on sidewalks.
  • Sitting alone in cafes or restaurants is common. Nobody cares if you're eating or working solo - people camp out with laptops and books for hours.
Getting Around
  • The metro runs 24/7 with automated trains every 2-6 minutes. It's clean and covers most tourist areas. The M4 line extension to Sydhavn opened in June 2024, adding five stations.
  • Bikes are how locals actually get around. There are 350km of separate bike lanes, and the city invested DKK 600 million in 2024 for more bike bridges and protected lanes. You can rent bikes easily, but the traffic takes practice - cyclists move fast and expect you to follow the rules.
  • All public transport (metro, buses, trains, harbor buses) uses one ticket system. As of January 2025: 2-zone ticket is DKK 22, 3-zone is DKK 28, 4-zone is DKK 38. City Pass gives unlimited rides for 24-120 hours. Buy through DOT Tickets app or at stations.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • May, June, and September have decent weather (12-20°C) without peak summer crowds. Accommodation costs less than July-August.
  • Summer (June-August) is warmest at 17-22°C with extremely long days - sunset around 10 PM in midsummer. Everything is more expensive and attractions get crowded.
  • Winter (December-February) is cold and gray (-1 to 4°C) but cheap. Christmas markets create some atmosphere in December, but January-March is pretty dreary. Go in winter if budget matters more than weather.
