Lyon, France
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Lyon.
Residential, upscale, quiet. Built around a large park with a zoo and botanical gardens. Very safe but doesn't have much nightlife or dining variety - you'll go to other neighborhoods for that. More expensive. Good if you want somewhere calm to stay.
The 6th arrondissement is built around Parc de la Tête d'Or - 117 hectares with a free zoo, botanical gardens, and a lake where you can rent rowing boats. Brotteaux is residential and upscale. Tree-lined streets, well-off families, quiet and calm. Good lighting, police around, stays safe day and night. The park gets busy on weekends with joggers, families having picnics, people on the lake. Restaurants will seat solo diners but there aren't as many options as in the center. Part-Dieu station is close by so you're well-connected, but nightlife and tourist stuff requires going elsewhere. Not much English outside the nicer restaurants, though their staff can usually handle basic English. After 10pm the streets empty out - feels more suburban than city center. If you want somewhere quiet and safe with park access, this works. But you'll be taking the metro or taxis to get to the more active parts of Lyon. Accommodation and food cost more because it's an affluent area.

Modern development at the rivers' confluence. Contemporary architecture, sustainable buildings, riverside dining. Safe, family-oriented, some nightlife. Lacks the historic character of older Lyon neighborhoods - planned and new rather than organic and old. Good if you're into contemporary urban design.
Lyon's bohemian district with art studios, vintage shops, and cafes where working alone is normal. Feels like a real neighborhood with a village vibe. You'll need to handle hills and basic French helps since less English is spoken here. Safe, walkable streets.
Lyon's main shopping and business district. Safe, well-lit, active day and night. Lots of dining options, bars, clubs. More expensive and less local-feeling than other areas, but convenient and easy to navigate. English is commonly understood.
