ModerateSome mistakes you only make once in Lyon. But you shouldn't have to make them at all. This free checklist reveals the 5 safety pitfalls that catch solo women off guard — so you can avoid them before they happen.
French is the main language. Tourist areas like Vieux Lyon and Presqu'île have English speakers, as do upscale hotels and restaurants. The emergency number 112 has operators who speak English. Younger people in cafes and shops often know basic English, but learning a few French phrases (bonjour, merci, s'il vous plaît, pardon) makes things easier.

Explore the different areas of Lyon and find the perfect neighborhood for your stay.
Renaissance architecture, traditional bouchons, lots of tourists. Safe during the day with families everywhere, but pickpockets work the crowds. Good for seeing the old town and trying Lyonnaise food, though you won't get much sense of what Lyon is actually like now.
Lyon's main shopping and business district. Safe, well-lit, active day and night. Lots of dining options, bars, clubs. More expensive and less local-feeling than other areas, but convenient and easy to navigate. English is commonly understood.
Lyon's bohemian district with art studios, vintage shops, and cafes where working alone is normal. Feels like a real neighborhood with a village vibe. You'll need to handle hills and basic French helps since less English is spoken here. Safe, walkable streets.
Residential, upscale, quiet. Built around a large park with a zoo and botanical gardens. Very safe but doesn't have much nightlife or dining variety - you'll go to other neighborhoods for that. More expensive. Good if you want somewhere calm to stay.
Business district with modern hotels and a big shopping mall. Convenient for train connections but no charm or local atmosphere. Pickpockets around the station, empty streets after work hours. If you're here for business or catching a train, fine. Otherwise stay elsewhere.
Modern development at the rivers' confluence. Contemporary architecture, sustainable buildings, riverside dining. Safe, family-oriented, some nightlife. Lacks the historic character of older Lyon neighborhoods - planned and new rather than organic and old. Good if you're into contemporary urban design.
