Lyon, France
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Lyon.
Lyon's main shopping and business district. Safe, well-lit, active day and night. Lots of dining options, bars, clubs. More expensive and less local-feeling than other areas, but convenient and easy to navigate. English is commonly understood.
Presqu'île is the peninsula between the Rhône and Saône rivers - Lyon's commercial center. Over 3,000 shops, including the big pedestrian strip Rue de la République that connects Place Bellecour to Place des Terreaux. Carré d'Or has 70+ designer boutiques, rue Victor Hugo is one of Europe's bigger pedestrian shopping areas. Business people eat lunch here, tourists shop, people meet for drinks. The 1800s Haussmannian buildings look nice, and since it's a UNESCO site they keep it maintained. Solo diners are common from cafes to nicer bistros - enough business travelers and locals around that nobody pays attention. Place Bellecour is one of the larger squares in Europe, works as the neighborhood's main meeting spot. On weekends it stays busy until midnight with bars, clubs, and restaurants keeping the streets lit and active. Police patrol regularly, though pickpockets are around during shopping hours. This is Lyon at its most polished and international. Safe, easy to navigate, visitor-friendly. You'll pay more for everything and it doesn't feel particularly local compared to somewhere like Croix-Rousse.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Lyon's bohemian district with art studios, vintage shops, and cafes where working alone is normal. Feels like a real neighborhood with a village vibe. You'll need to handle hills and basic French helps since less English is spoken here. Safe, walkable streets.
Modern development at the rivers' confluence. Contemporary architecture, sustainable buildings, riverside dining. Safe, family-oriented, some nightlife. Lacks the historic character of older Lyon neighborhoods - planned and new rather than organic and old. Good if you're into contemporary urban design.
Renaissance architecture, traditional bouchons, lots of tourists. Safe during the day with families everywhere, but pickpockets work the crowds. Good for seeing the old town and trying Lyonnaise food, though you won't get much sense of what Lyon is actually like now.
