Marseille, France
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Coastal residential area that's safer than central neighborhoods. Good beaches and scenery, less nightlife. Works if safety matters more than being in the middle of things.
Stretches along the coast from Vieux Port to the Prado beaches, taking in some of Marseille's better coastal areas. Endoume sits on the Corniche Kennedy coastal road with sea views and small coves like Vallon des Auffes, a tiny fishing village. This is where wealthier Marseillais families live, so it feels residential and safe - different from touristy Vieux Port or alternative Cours Julien. You'll see joggers on the Corniche at sunset, families at Catalans beach, people walking dogs in the evening. Normal neighborhood activity where you don't stand out. Beaches like Catalans, Malmousque, and Vallon des Auffes have the SAFER Plage system May-September (harassment reporting app and mediators). Restaurants like Chez Fonfon focus on good bouillabaisse without the scene. The tradeoff is distance - you're farther from city center action and need a bus or Uber to reach Cours Julien or nightlife. But if you care more about safety and coastal scenery than being in the middle of things, the 7th works well. Streets are lit, police are around, and wealthier demographics mean less crime.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Safe residential area with good central location and metro access. Not exciting, but genuine safety and local atmosphere make it work as a base.
Wealthiest area with beaches and upscale feel. Costs more and lacks city character, but very safe. Trade safety and beach access for authenticity and convenience.
The main harbor and tourist center with restaurants and cafes. Pickpocketing is the real problem, not violent crime. Safer than Le Panier but you need to watch your stuff.
