Marseille, France
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Safe residential area with good central location and metro access. Not exciting, but genuine safety and local atmosphere make it work as a base.
Central area around Place Castellane and the Prefecture with government offices, shops, and residential buildings. Middle-class and professional - where people actually live and work, not a tourist zone. You'll see families at local markets, office workers at bistros for lunch, students going to class. Feels safe because demographics are good and street life continues into evening. People report feeling comfortable walking here after dark, which you can't say about Le Panier or parts of Cours Julien. Government presence means consistent police and street lighting. Notre-Dame du Mont metro gets you to Cours Julien's nightlife or Vieux Port's restaurants in 10 minutes. No major tourist attractions, which is the point - you get real residential Marseille without the grittier areas' safety issues or the 8th's expensive sterility. Women eating alone at bistros is normal since office workers do lunch there. Less English here than tourist zones, so basic French helps. The tradeoff is you're not in the most exciting part of town. It's a safe, functional base to stay and then go explore other neighborhoods during the day.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Coastal residential area that's safer than central neighborhoods. Good beaches and scenery, less nightlife. Works if safety matters more than being in the middle of things.
Wealthiest area with beaches and upscale feel. Costs more and lacks city character, but very safe. Trade safety and beach access for authenticity and convenience.
The main harbor and tourist center with restaurants and cafes. Pickpocketing is the real problem, not violent crime. Safer than Le Panier but you need to watch your stuff.
