Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Udaipur

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Udaipur.

About Udaipur

  • Udaipur sits around Lake Pichola in the Thar Desert, with white marble palaces and narrow streets in the Old City. There are rooftop cafes everywhere - travelers sit for hours with coffee watching the lake. It's marketed as a romantic destination but gets plenty of backpackers too since the Old City stays busy year-round. Expect higher prices than other Rajasthani cities given the tourism focus.
  • The pace is slower than Delhi or Mumbai. Locals deal with tourists constantly and are generally helpful, though English drops off quickly outside hotels and tourist restaurants. Most places close by 10 PM - there isn't much nightlife culture here. That early shutdown means quieter streets at night, which has its pros and cons.
  • Tourist police patrol around Lake Pichola and you can reach emergency services at 112 or 100. Crime is lower than in bigger Indian cities, but the usual applies - watch your phone in crowded areas, dress modestly, don't wander down dark streets alone. The main tourist zone stays lit and busy until around 9-10 PM.
  • Uber and Ola both work here for fixed-price rides. Auto-rickshaws cost less but you'll negotiate every fare. The Old City is small enough to walk during cooler months, but April to June gets brutally hot - you won't want to walk anywhere midday.

Don't Learn These Lessons the Hard Way

Some mistakes you only make once in Udaipur. But you shouldn't have to make them at all. This free checklist reveals the 5 safety pitfalls that catch solo women off guard — so you can avoid them before they happen.

Safe Areas
  • Lake Pichola area
  • Old City (during daytime)
  • Fateh Sagar Lake area
  • City Palace complex
  • Ambamata
  • Jagdish Temple area
  • Main tourist ghats
Areas to Avoid
  • Isolated areas after dark
  • Poorly lit streets at night
  • Overly crowded markets (pickpocketing risk)
  • Unlicensed transportation
Language & Communication

Hindi and Rajasthani are the main languages. English is spoken at tourist police, hotels, and restaurants in tourist areas. The universal emergency number 112 has some English-speaking operators. Tourist police around Lake Pichola and City Palace can assist in English.

Cultural Tips
  • Cover your shoulders, chest, and thighs. Midi/maxi skirts and loose pants work. Bring a scarf for temples - you'll need to cover your head. This is standard throughout India, not specific to Udaipur, but people notice if you don't.
  • English works in tourist hotels, restaurants, and with tourist police. Outside those zones it drops off fast. Learn 'namaste' (hello), 'dhanyavaad' (thank you), 'kitna hai' (how much). Keep Google Translate handy.
  • Udaipur is conservative compared to Western cities but more relaxed than rural Rajasthan. In tourist areas, solo dining is normal - you'll see plenty of other travelers eating alone. The rooftop cafes are full of people with laptops and books.
  • The city shuts down around 10 PM. Most restaurants and shops close then. Not much happens after that even in tourist zones, so head back to your accommodation unless you've got specific late plans.
  • Take off shoes before entering temples and some guesthouses. Ask before photographing people, especially women in traditional dress. Don't do public displays of affection - it's frowned upon.
Getting Around
  • Uber and Ola both operate here with fixed pricing - no haggling. They show the fare upfront and you can track your ride. Both have regular cars and auto-rickshaws at different prices. Easiest option, especially at night.
  • Auto-rickshaws cost less than app rides but you negotiate every fare. Short trips run ₹5-20 within the city. They're more open than cars, which some people prefer, but the constant bargaining gets old fast.
  • City buses are cheapest and connect major areas, starting from Savina sub-city center. RSRTC buses go to other Rajasthan cities. They get packed during rush hour and English signage is hit or miss.
  • October to March you can walk around the Old City - most Lake Pichola attractions are 10-20 minutes apart on foot. But April to June is too hot to walk anywhere comfortably, even short distances.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • October to March has temperatures between 10-25°C (50-77°F). This is peak tourist season - the city gets crowded but at least you can walk around comfortably. Expect higher accommodation prices.
  • Monsoon runs July to September with temps around 25-35°C (77-95°F). The rain fills up the lakes and cools things off, which is nice, though you might skip some outdoor activities during downpours. Fewer tourists than winter.
  • April to June hits 40°C+ (104°F+). Hotels drop their prices because no one wants to be here - the heat makes sightseeing miserable. Only consider this if you really handle extreme heat well and care more about budget than comfort.
