Udaipur, India
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Udaipur.
More local than Lake Pichola with families and joggers instead of backpackers. Safe but less English and fewer solo-dining spots. Works if you want cheaper accommodation and don't mind being away from the tourist scene.
Northwest of Lake Pichola, this area gets more Indian families than international tourists. Evenings bring locals to the lakefront promenade for walks, paddleboat rentals, and street food - corn, samosas, chai. Fewer English speakers but more regular interaction with daily life here. Nehru Garden sits on an island you can boat to. Mid-range hotels cost less than Old City places and are still clean. Street lighting is good along the main lakefront road, with visible police though not as many as Lake Pichola. The vibe is suburban - joggers in the morning, families picnicking at sunset, couples on boats during the day. Fewer rooftop cafes for solo dining, more local restaurants where you might be the only foreigner. That feels either adventurous or lonely depending on your style. It's 15-20 minutes by rickshaw from the Old City - close enough to tourist stuff but far enough to feel residential.
