Erbil, Iraq
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Erbil.
The Christian district with the most relaxed atmosphere in Erbil. U.S. Embassy means good security, dress code is more casual, and there are actual bars and restaurants. Doesn't feel very Kurdish though.
Ankawa is the Christian part of Erbil, with about 40 churches and a different atmosphere from the rest of the city. Women wear jeans and regular tops here - still modest by Western standards but way more relaxed than downtown. The U.S. Embassy is in this area, which means lots of security and well-lit streets at night. More people speak English in the restaurants and shops since they're used to internationals. Solo dining is normal and nobody gives you weird looks. Families and young professionals come out in the evenings, and you can actually get alcohol at restaurants and bars here. The downside is it doesn't feel very Kurdish - it's more of an expat bubble. But if you want to go out at night, this is your safest option in Erbil.
