The station area is practical and safe, with plenty of food, lockers and transport links. It has less character than the riverside or Hondori, but it works for short stays and train connections.
Shinkansen, JR local lines and streetcars all meet at Hiroshima Station, and the ekie and Minamoa complexes next to it hold shops, restaurants and a large food hall. The area is busy and well lit from early morning to late night, which makes it a convenient base if you are moving on by train. The surrounding streets are mostly business hotels and chain restaurants rather than interesting alleys, so it feels more functional than atmospheric. There are English signs, left-luggage lockers, a tourist information centre and plenty of staff in the stations. A few side streets around the north exit are quieter at night, but the main routes are busy.

Hondori and Hatchobori are the easiest places in Hiroshima to eat, shop and drink alone. The streets are busy, lit and well served by trams, and the only real caution is pushy street touts near the late-night areas.
Hijiyama and Danbara are very safe and quiet, with a park, a museum and local streets. They suit anyone who wants a calm base, though evening choices are limited compared with the centre.
Kamiyacho and the Hiroshima Castle area are a calm, safe base close to the main sights. Evenings are quieter than in the entertainment districts, which suits anyone who wants an early night.
