Details

Located on the western edge along the Katsura River, Arashiyama has mountains, temples, and the famous bamboo grove. The bamboo grove is Instagram-famous, so expect crowds even early morning. The area centers on Togetsu-kyo Bridge with mountains behind and the river below. More hiking and temple gardens than city streets. The neighborhood draws families and couples, stays quiet even during peak seasons. The main commercial street runs along the river with restaurants doing yuba (tofu skin) and soba noodles, plus cafes in renovated traditional buildings. Most places close by 5-6 PM - this isn't a nightlife area. English is common in restaurants, lots of picture menus. The problem is it's at least 30 minutes by train from downtown, and it gets mobbed during cherry blossom and fall foliage seasons. If you stay overnight you can hit the bamboo grove early before the day-trippers arrive, but you'll need to head downtown for evening activities and more dining options.
