Kyoto, Japan
Fushimi Inari has one of Kyoto's most famous sights - hiking through thousands of torii gates. The sake district adds cultural exploration. Good for daytime visits but no accommodation or evening options - you'll head back to central Kyoto.
Fushimi has two parts - the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine with thousands of red torii gates climbing up the mountain, and the sake brewing district with spring water. The shrine stays busy early morning to evening with people hiking the torii gate trails through the forest. You can spend 2-3 hours hiking alone up Mount Inari (233 meters) surrounded by other hikers. Lower shrine near JR Inari Station is crowded, but higher up it thins out. Get there before 7 AM for misty, nearly empty trails. Casual restaurants and shops around the station cater to shrine visitors - English menus, tourist-friendly. Fifteen-minute walk south to the sake district where breweries do tastings and tours. The water here is soft and makes smooth sake. More local feel, less English, though brewery staff welcome foreigners. No accommodation or evening entertainment here - it's a daytime destination. Most people come from Kyoto Station (5 minutes on JR Nara Line), spend half a day, then head back. The shrine never closes - you can hike at dawn, dusk, or overnight for crowd-free experiences.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Kawaramachi is the most convenient area with good solo dining, shopping, and transport. Very safe but lacks the traditional atmosphere of Gion and temple areas.
Kyoto Station has maximum convenience, safety, and English support with good transport. Fine for arrivals and departures, but no neighborhood atmosphere and you'll need transit to reach most attractions.
Northern Higashiyama has peaceful temple experiences and the Philosopher's Path with fewer crowds. Good for contemplation and nature but limited dining and nightlife - you'll need to head downtown.
