Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto Station has maximum convenience, safety, and English support with good transport. Fine for arrivals and departures, but no neighborhood atmosphere and you'll need transit to reach most attractions.
Kyoto Station is a massive modern complex - futuristic glass and steel that contrasts with the rest of Kyoto. Inside you'll find department stores, restaurants on multiple floors, a rooftop garden, underground shopping. Convenient and secure. Hotels surround the station, including Hotel Granvia directly above it. Easy luggage storage, quick train access. Busy 24/7 with foot traffic and security, so late arrivals or early departures are stress-free. English is widely spoken, signs in multiple languages. The surrounding area mixes modern commercial buildings with some traditional streets, but lacks the charm of Gion or the local feel of Kawaramachi. Solo dining is easy - budget ramen to upscale kaiseki, lots of counter seating. Station restaurants stay open until 10-11 PM, later than most neighborhoods. The downside is you're not in a real neighborhood - this is a transit and hotel zone. You'll need trains or buses to reach most temples and traditional areas. Only Higashi Hongan-ji and Toji Temple are within walking distance. Good for first-time visitors or people with early trains, but you're trading neighborhood atmosphere for convenience.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Kawaramachi is the most convenient area with good solo dining, shopping, and transport. Very safe but lacks the traditional atmosphere of Gion and temple areas.
Fushimi Inari has one of Kyoto's most famous sights - hiking through thousands of torii gates. The sake district adds cultural exploration. Good for daytime visits but no accommodation or evening options - you'll head back to central Kyoto.
Northern Higashiyama has peaceful temple experiences and the Philosopher's Path with fewer crowds. Good for contemplation and nature but limited dining and nightlife - you'll need to head downtown.
