Largest district with most museums, parks, and mountain access. Safe with good attractions but too spread out to walk everywhere. Choose this if you want cultural sights combined with nature.

Covers nearly 40% of Almaty's territory and has most major landmarks. Ranges from upscale condos on Dostyk Avenue to individual houses near the foothills. You'll find the TV Tower, Palace of the Republic, Central Museum, Museum of Folk Musical Instruments, Central Mosque, and Holy Ascension Cathedral here. The southeastern edge borders Medeo Gorge with its high-altitude ice rink, plus Central Park and the Zoo. Attracts tourists during the day for museums and locals in the evenings for parks and cultural venues. Safety varies because it's so large - the central parts around museums and Dostyk Avenue are well-patrolled and safe, areas farther out get quieter at night. The concentration of attractions makes it essential for first-timers, but it's too spread out to walk everywhere so you'll need taxis or buses. You can do museums in the morning and mountain trails in the afternoon if you want both.
