Your Personal Safety Guide

Know exactly what YOU should do to stay safe in Nairobi — based on your personal experience level and travel style.

Summary

Maximum security thanks to UN and embassy presence. Village Market mall and Karura Forest are the main draws. It's expensive and feels more like an international zone than Kenya. Choose this if safety trumps authenticity.

Details

The diplomatic area with UN headquarters, embassies, and heavy security everywhere. It's probably the safest part of Nairobi due to all the international organizations. Village Market is the main attraction - a huge mall with 100+ stores, restaurants, bowling, and even water slides. The restaurant options are diverse (Jiko is supposed to be Nairobi's best, plus West African at Golden Stool). Karura Forest next door has walking trails and cafes. It's far from downtown and feels more like an international compound than Kenya, but that's the tradeoff for maximum security. Good if safety is your top priority and you don't mind being in a bubble.
