English and Swahili are official. English is common in tourist areas, hotels, and upscale neighborhoods. Learning basic Swahili helps - 'Jambo' (hello), 'Asante' (thank you), 'Hakuna matata' (no problem). The 1195 gender violence hotline has Swahili, English, and local language speakers.

Explore the different areas of Nairobi and find the perfect neighborhood for your stay.
The tourist hub with malls, international restaurants, and nightlife. More expensive but safer than most of Nairobi, with English spoken everywhere. Good base if you want Western amenities and don't mind paying for convenience.
Peaceful, upscale suburb with major wildlife attractions nearby. One of the safest areas in Nairobi but far from downtown. You'll depend on Ubers to get anywhere, which adds up. Worth it if you prioritize safety and quiet over being near the action.
The nightlife district with clubs and bars along the main roads. Pleasant residential area during the day. If you're going out at night, stick to the upscale venues with security and go with others - not an area to be alone after dark.
Maximum security thanks to UN and embassy presence. Village Market mall and Karura Forest are the main draws. It's expensive and feels more like an international zone than Kenya. Choose this if safety trumps authenticity.
Residential area with growing restaurant scene. Less touristy than Westlands, similar safety level. Good for longer stays when you want neighborhood amenities without the expat bubble.
Exclusive old-money area with top security but little for visitors. Mainly relevant if you're staying at a luxury hotel here or know residents. Karura Forest and Village Market nearby are the actual attractions.
Secure residential area with diplomatic presence. Limited attractions - mainly relevant as a safe place to stay or for dining at places like Lord Erroll. You'll Uber everywhere from here.
Downtown has some worthwhile sights (KICC, Railway Museum, Maasai Market) but needs serious caution. Go with a guide during daylight, keep everything hidden, leave before sunset. Stay in a safer neighborhood and just visit the CBD for specific attractions.
