Your Personal Safety Guide

Know exactly what YOU should do to stay safe in Nairobi — based on your personal experience level and travel style.

Summary

Peaceful, upscale suburb with major wildlife attractions nearby. One of the safest areas in Nairobi but far from downtown. You'll depend on Ubers to get anywhere, which adds up. Worth it if you prioritize safety and quiet over being near the action.

Details

Named after Karen Blixen who lived here in the early 1900s, this upscale suburb 15km southwest of downtown is one of the safest parts of Nairobi. Think tree-lined streets, gated properties, and a village-like atmosphere. The main draws are the Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, and David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage - all close by. The restaurant scene is strong with places like Talisman and Cultiva, and there are shopping centers at The Hub and Karen Crossroads. You'll need Uber for everything since it's far from the center, but the tradeoff is actual peace and quiet. Good spot to decompress before or after safari trips.

Maximum security thanks to UN and embassy presence. Village Market mall and Karura Forest are the main draws. It's expensive and feels more like an international zone than Kenya. Choose this if safety trumps authenticity.
