Your Personal Safety Guide

Know exactly what YOU should do to stay safe in Nairobi — based on your personal experience level and travel style.

Summary

Downtown has some worthwhile sights (KICC, Railway Museum, Maasai Market) but needs serious caution. Go with a guide during daylight, keep everything hidden, leave before sunset. Stay in a safer neighborhood and just visit the CBD for specific attractions.

Details

Downtown Nairobi mixes colonial buildings, modern towers, street vendors, and chaos. During the day you can visit KICC tower viewpoint, Railway Museum, National Archives, and the Saturday Maasai Market at High Court parking. Walking is possible on main streets in daylight if you keep valuables hidden and stay alert. After 6pm it changes completely - vendors leave, offices empty, safety drops. River Road, Kirinyaga Road, and the Archives area are sketchy even during the day. Best to join an organized tour or hire a guide, see what you want to see, and leave before sunset. Don't stay here - base yourself in a safer suburb and just visit for specific things during daylight.

Peaceful, upscale suburb with major wildlife attractions nearby. One of the safest areas in Nairobi but far from downtown. You'll depend on Ubers to get anywhere, which adds up. Worth it if you prioritize safety and quiet over being near the action.

The nightlife district with clubs and bars along the main roads. Pleasant residential area during the day. If you're going out at night, stick to the upscale venues with security and go with others - not an area to be alone after dark.
