Puebla, Mexico
University town near Puebla with the world's largest pyramid. Good restaurants, craft breweries, international community. Bohemian vibe with better nightlife than Puebla.
Cholula is a university town 20 minutes from Puebla. It's more laid-back and younger than the city, with international students from local universities. The Great Pyramid of Cholula (largest pyramid base in the world) dominates the view, topped by the colorful Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios church. The area around the pyramid and main plaza stays busy late with students, digital nomads, and travelers in cafes, craft breweries, and rooftop bars. Eating alone is normal since students and young professionals do it constantly. More English speakers than in Puebla proper because of the international students. Good food scene - everything from cemitas to Italian, Vietnamese, craft beer. Generally safe, especially tourist areas, though standard night precautions apply. Bohemian, artsy vibe with coworking cafes, yoga studios, cultural events. Works as a base if you want relaxed atmosphere and better nightlife than Puebla while staying close enough to visit the city's museums.
