• Puebla is Mexico's fourth-largest city at 7,200 feet elevation. The historic center has UNESCO status for its Talavera-tiled colonial buildings and baroque churches. On clear days you can see the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Tourist police patrol the Centro during the day, but most people take Uber or taxis after dark since the streets empty out.
• There's a strong cafe culture here, particularly in La Paz and around the Centro. You'll see people working on laptops or reading alone in cafes - it's completely normal. Locals are generally friendly without being pushy. English isn't common outside high-end hotels and tourist restaurants, so Google Translate or basic Spanish helps a lot.
• The food is a major draw - Puebla invented mole poblano and the cemita sandwich. You'll eat well for significantly less than in places like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. Everything from street chalupas for a few pesos to upscale takes on traditional poblano dishes.
• The RUTA metrobus, Uber, and radio taxis make getting around straightforward. The historic center is walkable during the day. Cholula is about 20 minutes away - a college town with the Great Pyramid and good restaurants. Since Puebla isn't tourist-heavy, prices are lower and things feel more authentically Mexican, but that also means fewer English speakers.

Spanish is the main language. English is less common here than in touristy Mexican cities. Tourist police speak some English, high-end hotels have English-speaking staff, and 911 has some English operators. Basic Spanish phrases or Google Translate helps a lot.

• Puebla is more conservative than beach towns like Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Local women usually wear jeans and t-shirts rather than shorts and tank tops. Dressing similarly helps avoid unwanted attention.
• For churches and religious sites, cover your shoulders and wear pants or long skirts. Keep quiet inside and don't interrupt services.
• English is rare outside high-end hotels and tourist restaurants. Basic phrases help: 'hola', 'gracias', 'por favor', 'disculpe', and 'la cuenta' (the check). Google Translate makes a big difference.
• When joining a group, greet people individually rather than waving at everyone. Same if you arrive late to dinner - individual greetings. Tipping 10-20% is standard.
• Being 30 minutes late to social gatherings is normal and even polite in Mexican culture. But be on time for tours, buses, and business meetings.

• The RUTA metrobus has three main lines on dedicated lanes so it's faster than sitting in traffic. Modern buses, around 9-12 pesos per ride. There's no dedicated app - use Google Maps to figure out routes. Security personnel at stations.
• Uber and Didi both work here. They're the safer option at night. Pickup times can be longer than in bigger cities, but you can reserve ahead. Uber typically costs less than taxis.
• Radio taxis are registered and safer than street cabs, though they cost about 10 pesos more. Negotiate the fare upfront since there are no meters. Don't take unmarked taxis or flag down cabs on the street, especially after dark.
• The historic center is flat and walkable during the day. After dark, stick to well-lit main streets or just take a taxi even for short distances.
• If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
