City Center is the straightforward choice if it's your first time - walkable, English-speaking staff, main attractions are close. More expensive and touristy than other areas, but convenient and generally safe.
Lozenets has good cafes, restaurants, and nightlife. Popular with young professionals and expats. Costs more than other areas but you're seeing local life beyond the tourist center. Safe, though weekend nights are noisy.
Oborishte is residential Sofia just outside the tourist center. Good traditional restaurants, old architecture, family-friendly feel. Less English and quieter at night than downtown, but you're seeing how locals live while staying close to main sights.
Vitosha Boulevard is the main pedestrian street with cafes, restaurants, and shops. Always active, well-lit, English-speaking staff. The boulevard stays safe and busy. Avoid the northern end near Sveta Nedelya Square late at night.
Student district with cheap nightlife and heavy party scene. Loud, crowded, far from tourist areas. Worth experiencing the university culture if that's your thing, but not where you want to stay. Watch your drinks in packed clubs.
Mountain neighborhoods with nature access, clean air, hiking trails. Safe and quiet but isolated from city attractions and nightlife. Works if you're focused on hiking and okay with 30-minute commutes for dining and sightseeing. Limited English, fewer services than central areas.
