Manila, Philippines
Budget area with cheap accommodation and local culture, but some red light district elements and safety concerns at night. Only stay here if you're experienced with Southeast Asia and on a tight budget.
Budget traveler area near Manila Bay with cheap hotels, art galleries, bars, and restaurants. There's an arts scene with cultural events at galleries, and you get sunset views over the bay. Much cheaper than Makati or BGC. Safe enough during the day to walk around. The problem is parts of Malate have girlie bars and massage parlors, especially around Remedios Circle. The nightlife feels seedier than Poblacion or BGC - more aggressive promoters, less security. Women traveling alone report mixed experiences - some were fine if they stayed aware, others felt uncomfortable with the attention. If you stay here, stick to well-lit main streets at night, use Grab after dark, and don't flash valuables. Fine if you're on a tight budget and street-smart, but probably not the best choice for your first time in Southeast Asia.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Historic walled city with Spanish colonial architecture worth seeing during the day. Not safe after dark - visit between 9am-5pm then leave for dinner elsewhere. Don't stay overnight.
Manila's nightlife area with lots of bars, restaurants, and a young creative crowd. Safe enough with people around but grittier than Makati. Good if you want to go out and meet other travelers.
Manila's financial district with the highest safety levels. You'll pay more for everything but get reliable service and heavy security. Good choice if you prioritize safety over experiencing local Manila.
