Your Personal Safety Guide

Know exactly what YOU should do to stay safe in Porto — based on your personal experience level and travel style.

Summary

Porto's upscale beach area where the river meets the ocean. Safe and quiet with a family atmosphere, but you'll pay more for everything and need transport to reach downtown attractions. Good if you want a peaceful base away from the tourist center.

Details

About 20 minutes from downtown, Foz is where the Douro River meets the Atlantic. This is where wealthy locals live - think families walking dogs on the beach promenade and weekend brunches, not backpackers and bars. There are beaches (Praia do Molhe, Praia dos Ingleses, Praia da Luz) connected by a walkway that's nice for solo walks along the water. Everything costs more here since it's an upscale area, but you get a quiet, safe atmosphere and seafood restaurants with ocean views. Avenida do Brasil has the nicer cafes and bars where eating alone fits the vibe, especially for brunch or sunset drinks. Some English spoken since there's an international community. Very safe day and night with the family atmosphere, though it gets quiet after 10pm since it's residential. Main downside is you're far from Porto's sights and nightlife - you'll need to take metro or taxis to get downtown.

The port wine cellar side of the river. Come for wine tours and views of Porto. Safe and less crowded than central Porto, though also less happening at night. Jardim do Morro viewpoint attracts pickpockets.
